Getting Inked by Apo Whang-Od and Grace

December 27, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

Oh, the longest land travel I've had in my lifetime. ALMOST 24 HOURS IN THE ROAD. Traffic, and road constructions combined, I thought we wouldn't reach our destination. But we did. Sakit sa pwet. Huhuhu. But Kalinga!

I went to Victory Liner Kamias Station to pre-booked our seats for Manila-Tabuk, Kalinga route. I paid PhP700/head. This was a brilliant move, because on the day of the trip, both the 7pm and the 830pm schedules were fully booked. We left the station at past 7pm, which was a good thing because both Pao and Aron were late, but they were able to catch up when the bus was already moving. Still a good thing, right? :P Manila to Tabuk, should only take 10-12hrs, 15hrs if one is not so lucky, but gawd, it took us almost 24 freaking hours to reach Tabuk, Kalinga. It took our entire day. We decided to go to Tinglayan the following day, Aron and Pao cooked our dinner (they cooked almost all our meals, the perks of backpacking with them :P), we had coffee and slept for the day.

We started our trek going to Buscalan early in the morning, it was more than an hour trek. But the place is picturesque, it was worth it!
Game on!
the view on our way to Buscalan
Oh, of course, we went to Buscalan in Kalinga Province for Apo Whang-Od. She is the living legend, the last mambabatok in Buscalan. Batok is an ancient technique in tattooing, compared to the conventional way of getting inked, this is painful. Apo and Grace used pomelo thorn in tattooing.

There were lots of people when we get there. Apo Whang-Od was already doing her thing, and people were watching, amazed and scared (well, for me). I had my first tattoo back in 2010, and thought of having another one by Apo Whang-Od, who would say no getting inked by her? Not me, definitely. But I chickened out, I could hear every tap-tap-tap of Apo, and that was enough for me to change my mind. I immediately decided to get a tattoo with Grace, her granddaughter. I looked at the traditional tattoo illustrations in the board, and was attracted to the traveler star. I actually googled that earlier, and was really thinking of getting that.
the tattoo illustrations
I went to Grace, and it didn't hurt as much I think it would hurt if I let Apo Whang-Od do it instead. Well, the latter part quite hurt. :P Grace is young, but also good.
Despite being hesitant on getting inked by Apo Whang-Od, I was still determined not to leave Buscalan without getting inked by her. Imagine the internal struggle. Then, somebody told us that we can actually get her signature, three dots instead. I opted on that one. I also did not have to queue if I'd be only getting her signature. Yay.
I was really happy that I've got to be inked by both Whang-Od and Grace. Please make sure to bring wet tissues (useful during the actual pambabatok) and petroleum jelly (for after tattoo care). During lunch, we chatted with Grace, and she is like your typical confidante who gives sound advice. Yup, we talked about love and life.

We left after lunch. As we explored the place, and we were in awe on how beautiful this God's creation. It was a good idea to visit Kalinga, not only for Apo Whang-Od but also for witnessing the love of God through his magnificent creations.

For bonus point on this trip, we got to stay in a century-old nipa house, with bonfire ito ha! Bongga!

The Sandbox Adventures

November 02, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

My friend Apple has been back to work for months, and so it's back to adventures (and petty fights) with her. :P We went to Sandbox with her college friends and Dwin last July. Dwin picked me up in Makati, together with my stuff that I'd bring home after our trip. We met up with the rest of the group in Cubao and headed to Pampanga. I sat beside Dwin, and wasn't really a good navigator, so we got a bit lost. :P We reached Sandbox in one piece though, and the lines weren't still so bad. Lucky for us, I guess.
Sandbox crew
AND that's me!
We availed of Package A for PhP750 which includes the entrance fee, giant swing, aerial walk, free fall, rappelling, wall climbing and roller coaster zipline. It was super sulit, trust me!
Package A
We started on the wall climbing, which I have been meaning to try for years. BUT I've mentioned it a whole lot of times, my upper body is weak. And yup, my upper body is still weak despite being more active this year. I had numerous attempts, and the staff was nice enough to let me until I gave up on my own. I TRIED GUYS.
wall climbing preparation
Yup, I could still smile like that. :P
I TRIED!!!
After we all had our turns on the wall climbing, we headed on the rappelling. This I did badly. :P More badly than I would normally have done, I guess. :P I kinda panicked. Fine, I panicked. But I was safe and unhurt.
the rappelling preparation
Oops, look at that!
waiting
Watch how badly I did the rapelling. :P

We decided to do the aerial walk which was very interesting. Each of the obstacles provided level of difficulty which we passed with flying colors. We bought the photos they took of us, and we were able to haggle the price. :P
Aerial Walk
The obstacles were quite difficult to pass. We were terribly exhausted after we finished it. My legs were wobbling on this one. Seriously.
AND this is how you balance!
The other obstacles were also challenging. But the above photo would probably the most intense part for me.

Dwin finished last, because he started last too. He was missing when we started on the Aerial Walk. We waited for him to finish. We went to do the other activities, but I chickened out on the free fall. I did the rollercoaster zipline which was quite interesting. Apple did another wall climbing (we had a spare ticket), and we were not able to do the giant swing. It rained hard after we finished all the activities. But it was definitely a fun day.

Oh, here's my profile-worthy photo from our Sandbox adventure. :P
smile :P

When friendships, and relationships in general, are collapsing; it is comforting to know that some people choose to stay in my life.

I miss you, said the star of the universe. I miss the way you smile like a child in awe of the world. She smiled to herself. The universe, as always, has a way of making her feel better. But that was before, when they used to share the same sky and breathe same air. But yes, I miss you, said the star of the universe.

My Happy Place

October 01, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

It has always been in my bucket list to just pack my stuff, and go. But not really brave enough to go on that kind of adventure until few weeks ago. I actually got crazy, pack my things and went to Boracay. I was supposed to go and visit Cotabato with friends, but the recent bombing in that place simply wouldn't allow it. The friends can't accommodate the change of plans. I needed a break. I was getting terribly cray cray. I had panic attacks. I had crying spells. I needed a break then, but at the same time I was scared I won't be able to handle being alone. I can travel solo, so that really was, I dunno, crazy.

I had to be able to be comfortable with just being with myself again. I had to do this. I booked a flight to Boracay a week before the scheduled leave. In the morning of my flight, I booked my accommodation. Auhm, I was hesitant to book the place because I was alone, and would have to shoulder the accommodation expenses by myself. But I needed to relax, I needed to do this. I chose Willy's Beach Hotel.

I was feeling better a day before my vacay. I was feeling the excitement I used to feel whenever I go on vacation. I got to Boracay at around 7pm, and stayed in a dormitory room at Chill Out Hostel for the night. It was walking distance to D Mall, I walked from there to D Mall for my dinner. I actually shopped a bikini top on my first night. But it was at 70% off, good deal, promise!

I had breakfast before I left the hostel, it was included on what I paid for. I actually would recommend staying in this place if you don't mind a bit of walking. The place opened only this May, and they have the nicest staff.

I still had time to get a coffee before I checked in to Willy's so I went to Real Coffee and got myself the calamansi muffin too. I stayed a bit and read.

The room where I stayed in Willy's Beach Hotel can actually accommodate three. This is a beachfront hotel in Station 1. Yup, I splurged a bit. I rested a bit in the room, and changed. I stayed in the beach bed, and read. So that was my routine on the days I was there. I would wake up in the morning, eat in the buffet breakfast, swim a bit, read in the beach bed, walk from Station 1 to Station 3 (Come on, the Workweek Hustle is always on!) and watch TV at night. Like a boss. Lakas makamayaman. I don't usually drink when I travel alone, so yup, I lola mode when I was there. :P

It was a bed weather when I was there in Boracay. Not much rain, but the waves were crazy, but somehow, these calmed me. This was my second Boracay trip for this year. Hmmm, planning to go there every once in a while to recharge.

The truth is, I don't want to catch you in a lie. I don't want anyone to catch in a lie. Because if there is one thing I am pretty sure I could not forgive (and forget), it is that.

To the wanderer, you are a lost soul. You found me in my peace, and you got attracted to my light. We wandered in the streets, and found the noise a lullaby.

To the wanderer, you brought me in your world, and I found it interesting. We wandered in the streets, and found the noise appealing.

To the wanderer, we wandered in the world, and found the laughters utterly satisfying. We broke the boundaries, and kept wanting for more than the sights in the city.

To the wanderer, but you are a lost soul. You got tired of my light. You left me in the middle of the city, and I had to wander on my own.

To the wanderer, I wandered. I went back to the place where you found me the first time; I struggled to go back, leaving the noise of the city behind me. I numbed to the bright lights of the streets. I found my way home.

To the wanderer, you will find your home. Trust me.

Home Sweet Home

August 29, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

Yup, we moved to the new house two weeks ago. The housewarming was a week ago. My office friends from the current company came, so as my friends in the previous company. Plus the friends from my masters and the Peys friends also came last Saturday. My relatives also visited. My mother cooked on that day.

I bought it in 2013, but only finished the downpayment early this year. It took me that long, auhm, what with my all my travels and stuff. I thought, I had money for it. But finally, noh? The house is pretty small, and we had to hire people to construct the bed frames, cabinets, closets, shelves and whatnots. So, that took another month to finish. I'm glad Mandaue Foam's always on sale, so most of the items were bought there. The center table and the TV rack were bought in Home Plus. I bought a painting in a bazaar in Glorietta. I had to take it home, I don't have a car for crying out loud. I also bought the floor lamp in the same bazaar. My friend was kind enough to bring it home. My cousin should be the one to do the interior design, but she left for Dubai. I had to ask her all the time if the stuff fits together. Hihi. I've got a set of plates and utensils as early housewarming gifts, my friends gave me baking stuff last week too. Oh, thank God for family and friends.

It has been a struggle. Believe me. There were a number of times in the past when I regretted this decision, but glad that it did not stop me from achieving this goal. I always pray to God to give me the strength I need. God provides, trust me. There were a number of times I felt like giving up, but His help came at the right time.
But yup, we moved to our new home. My heart is happy. I've learned my lessons, the next time I (we) buy a house, it's a must to be financially and emotionally ready. :P

Yoga

August 28, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

Auhm, I've been pretty busy in the past months. I have not been able to update my blog as much. But I'll work on my backlogs, I promise.

I am doing yoga, but on a break for almost a month already. I finished the 40-day yoga in Urban Ashram, but no, I only did around half of it. My core is meh, I really needed time to recover after each of the yoga sessions. I was supposed to get the annual corporate package, they have tie up with my company but found out about the HSBC promo in Bikram Yoga, I got the 3-month unlimited package for half the price. I KNOW RIGHT. I would have wanted to get the annual package, but I am planning to get it by the end of the year, if my plan won't work out. But that's another story.

Bikram Yoga is renting out yoga mat for PhP50, if you don't have your own. But it's hot yoga, come on. I decided to buy one few months ago. It's a local brand, but it does the job. I found Made for Movement online, and bought the purple Queen Ultimat for PhP2250 plus the sling for PhP300. You can shoot them a message in this number: 09178998318. The online accounts seem not active, better message them, alright?
my Queen Ultimat
I thought I could live with the sling alone for my yoga mat. But decided that I needed a yoga bag. I found this very nice yoga bag for PhP600 in Instagram, yakangyakabarter. It is very nice, and has a little pocket to put the sling. :P They also customize.
Not my photo, but mine's the second one from the left
Bikram Yoga is renting out yoga towel for PhP40. I am planning to get yoga mat spray for my mat. My Fitbit will be counting the calories that I will burn on each of the sessions. I seem to be ready to go back on my mat, noh? I have to drink lotsa water everyday. It's a must, especially for hot yoga.

I am hoping to be very committed on my yoga practice. For a change, I want to be good at something, #whogoat.

To my future love, I wander. I got lost. I settled to that guy who loved the idea of me. I  made mistakes. I got hurt when that guy left as he walked in the rain on my side. He (they) cannot keep up with my storm.

I wander. And I apologize for getting lost. But my love, do we really apologize for entrusting our heart to someone?

To my future love, I wander. In wandering, we sometimes get ourselves broken. Please be patient with me. I trust you, I trust you to be patient with me.

To my future love, I wander. I cannot apologize for not being whole. The past taught me to live in the present. I cannot regret my past, I cannot regret my mistakes. But I regret not meeting you during the early years, only for the reason that I would have wanted to share my milestones with you. Yes, I would have loved to share my happiness with you. There were moments when I would have wanted to smile with you from the stage when I graduated on my masters. The joyous moment when I would have wanted to text you after I have gotten the result of my certifications. It would have been convenient to share the pain and struggles with you on achieving my latest milestone. There were many instances I would have gladly shared with you. But my love, we will make memories. We will celebrate each other's milestones.

To my future love, I wander. But my trusting heart and my hopeful soul pray to meet you at the time when we are ready; when the universe is ready. I have faith in us, and in God.

Seoul (Not) Searching: Petite France and Garden of the Morning Calm

June 26, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

We missed visiting Petite France, a French cultural village, when we visited Nami Island. So, since we had lots of time, we decided to still pay a visit on this one on another day. This place pays tribute to Saint-Exupery, the author of the French novel Le Petite France. We paid 6,000 won for the entrance fee. We took the Gapyeong shuttle bus to Petite France. We paid 6,000 won. There are galleries and memorial hall dedicated to Saint-Exupery.

The Petite France was also the location in one of the famous scenes in the Koreanovela, My Love from the Star. So yes, I watched it, this was shown few years ago only. :P

But aside from that there are lots to see in Petite France, lotsa pretty things related to the French culture of course.

We were in Petite France when I received messages that my photo has been shortlisted in the Asia Photo Competition at work. Hihi. We were leaving that time, going to the Garden of the Morning Calm. We went to the bus terminal, and waited for the shuttle. We paid 7,000 won for the entrance. The Garden of the Morning Calm is the oldest private garden in Korea.

I have higher expectations, maybe this wasn't the time of the year. The private garden is huge, some parts were awesome, but other parts were not. But the some parts that were good really looked grand.

Okay, or maybe I just had higher expectations then? Given another chance to visit Korea, I'd probably not skip the Garden of the Morning Calm, and would be eagerly pay another visit.

Seoul Searching: Hello Kitty Cafe and Lotte World

June 12, 2016 Tsina 0 Comments

We got lost searching for the Hello Kitty Cafe. Because we really have to be here, I love Hello Kitty, reallyyyy. We took the wrong train stop, and already walked a lot before we finally get to see the cafe. It was already lunch, we decided to get ramen before having our coffee fix in this cute shop. Hihi.

If you're actually rooting for Hello Kitty, this is the place to go. The shop is pink! You could actually feel the Hello Kitty vibe here. We got ourselves coffee, and settled on one of the tables.
Hello Kitty Cafe

Look at this coffee art, Hello Kitty, hihi. Lovely.
coffee fix
After we had our coffee fix, we went to Lotte World, an indoor theme park. I was supposed to meet my college friends (ex's classmates, sorta same group of friends). But they went to Nami Island, and got stranded because it rained hard. We bought the after 7pm ticket, it has a different rate. Well, cheaper. The regular rate is 33,000 won, for after 7pm it would only be 17,000 won. We weren't planning to try the rides, so after 7pm admission ticket should suffice.

We found the merry-go-round used in the koreanovela Stairway to Heaven, hihi. So yes, I watched it as well when I was younger. :P Blame GMA7. :P
the merry-go-round
Di ko sure kung ano trip ko nito. :P
We went around Lotte World while waiting for the night parade. The theme park looks grand at night.
Lotte World after 7pm
The night parade was equally amazing. It lit the whole place.

We left right after the night parade. It was a long day anyway.
long but fun day
